INDIVIDUAL PSYCHOTHERAPY

Individual counseling and psychotherapy form the basis of my private work with clients.  In simplest terms, within the guidelines of sound clinical practice, I help people to explore, define, and accept the nature of the problems bringing them to treatment; to examine, understand, and correct irrational thoughts and behaviors where and when they occur; to identify and establish realistic goals, and take appropriate and purposeful action toward achieving them; to become educated and empowered to the extent possible; and, ultimately, to return to wellness and a more optimal level of functioning.  I work with older adolescents and adults as an independent practitioner or as a member of a clinical team.

With an emphasis on cognitive behavioral therapies in particular, I utilize a variety of insight-oriented, humanistic, and interpersonal approaches, together with other evidence-based practices, to treat patients experiencing difficulties and dysfunction in their lives, including those resulting from adjustment disorders; mood disorders; anxiety disorders; substance use disorders; thinking disorders; inadequate  stress management abilities; relationship problems; education-based, career-based, and phase of life-based deficits and disabilities; complicated grief and loss; infertility and adoption, and other areas of concern.

GROUP COUNSELING

In general, I strive to organize groups in one of two ways:  either creating groups according to members' similar diagnostic profiles; or creating groups according to members' identified subject areas in which they want to make progress.  Often, clients find the group format to be a more experiential way to work through issues, either as an adjunct to individual therapy, or as a stand alone modality.  Groups are typically small, preferably no more than 8-10 members; and are of varying duration.  Some revolve around developing enhanced coping skills to more effectively manage chronic problems associated with specific psychiatric disabilities.  Others revolve around specific subject areas, and are focused on supporting members' progress toward achieving goals.
